So I had a shitty Saturday.

I started working on my old blue Mazda on Saturday after it sitting with the cab full of Rock Auto boxes for a couple of months. I got the front end mostly pulled apart but then encountered an axle nut that I didn’t expect. It wasn’t a nut but one with recesses in meant for a special tool to remove (think like adjusting a shock). When I’ve seen these before I’ve been able to use a drift to remove them but this one was recessed into the hub too far to be able to do that.

I made a tool run to O’reillys to see if they had anything I could rent that could accomplish this and came up short. Next was to head to Harbor Freight to see if I could find something useful in their shelves.

While pulling away from a stop light as the third car back we got almost up to speed and the first car decided to make an immediate left turn instead of at the light like a sane person. They stopped abruptly to make that turn and the car in front of me (CX9) stopped just barely in time to avoid rear ending the truck but I was not able to...

Kinja'd!!!

And yes that is antifreeze on the ground...

Insurance adjuster at first sight thought it was totaled. My firs thought was that it was right on the line. She ran through the visible numbers though and it came up at $6500 of damage just this side of totaled since it is a pretty desirable car (TDI, sunroof and so on) and was in good shape and she marked the value at ~11k. She also expected to find more damage as the shop started to take it apart so it could still go either way.

I know modern cars are designed to crumple, but this seems extreme. I was probably going 10 and decelerating quickly when I hit her.

Kinja'd!!!

I had this car almost a year and have loved it. Fuckity Fuck!

CX9 I hit that looks virtu ally unscathed other than a banged up bumper cover and a VW logo imprint in it.

Kinja'd!!!

I did get it to the shop on Saturday and they looked at it on Monday as the nasty storm was hitting St Louis so at least I’m at the front of the list for a busy as hell time for the body shop and insurance company.

Bummer! :(

This has been a terrible week for the cars of Oppo!

That stinks!

. . . but, um, did you get the tool that you needed from Harbor Freight?

Thanks - Definitely wished I had not gone out running errands after that...

I am seriously pissed at myself on this. I had never loved the braking capabilities of my car and had planned on upgraded EBC brakes and new tires which would have prevented this.

Now I might have to go fucking car shopping again!

No I did not - but Sunday I sat and stared and cursed at the old Mazda for about an hour and figured out a way around my problem. I didn’t even need to go out for the fucking tool on Saturday. Man did I curse at the old truck and myself for a while after that...

Even I’m down for the count. Rally car confiscated, daily broken further, motorcycle broken, and I’m having to drive my garage queen right now!

Oh, no. That’s just rubbing salt in the wound. Can’t even be happy that you figured out a way around it.

I suspect the reason your car got damaged so much is because the lower crash structure was missed. Looks like the Mazda’s bumper is level to your grille, which means the meaty crash structure below didn’t get to do all of its job.

Sucks that even crossovers ride too damn high for those driving cars. :(

This just accelerated my plans for a full brake upgrade. Going from motorcraft on my CVPI to Wilwoods, and braided brake lines, too.

That should be a nice bump. It was killing me talking to my wife about that. I just wasn’t ready to shell out $400 on parts - ha! That’s my deductible so I’m going to end up paying it anyway...

Drove it to my parents’ place. They decided to take my keys and demand I drive home in one of the garage queens. The girlfriend (Venom in this thread) also hates the rally car as much as my parents do, so I gave in and did an adulty thing.

I’m not too mad, though. Since the 2016 was low on fuel (fuel that was over a year old, mind you) I needed to get fuel. I happened to run across an old friend I haven’t seen in years and I got to hang out with her last night. Had I driven home in the rally car that wouldn’t have happened!

And...I do like hitting the turbo in the little thing. :D ...just...all this darn salt.

Gotcha. I have to say, this one they were right about. I really think you should put the doors back onto the Festiva.

Also, I just can’t wrap my mind around paying good money for vehicles that don’t get used.  Does not compute for me.

I couldn’t care less about the opinions of my parents. If they had their way I wouldn’t own any smarts or motorcycles and I wouldn’t even be transitioning . I also managed to get the car to a state that police seemed to be okay with (hatch back on, bars where the doors were).

On the other hand, the opinion of the girlfriend is valued far more. She hates all my Gambler vehicles, but she specifically doesn’t even want me to drive this one. Well, t he kart idea was fun while it lasted. And my was it some of the most fun I’ve ever had on four wheels.

It’ll continue to have no doors until one more Gambler 500 later this month. Should it survive that run, the doors and windows will join the hatch in being put back on. Since the doors are infuriating to put on, once they’re back on I’m keeping them on for the remainder that I own the car.

On the money bit, I’ve always wanted my dream car to be an occasionally driven garage queen. Something I’d take on fancy dates or other big things in my life, but otherwise is not a daily . Heck, if I had the space I’d literally have it parked in my living room as a sort of art installation . I never intended for it to sit for as long as I have , but this year I found myself particularly  distracted. Mind you, I’m not even buying motorcycles anymore.

Admittedly, that is probably a bad excuse for the behaviour.

I know enough about your parents to agree that their opinion is of no value. Even a bli nd squirrel finds a nut every now and then though.

Anyways, if you love the car, you need to at least drive it some. The worst thing you can do to a vehicle, is just let it sit.

I just wanna clarify something. I don’t actively hate your gambler cars. I exaggerate a lot. I think it’s badass what you do with them, they’re just not my style/usually have a reason (like accelerating at the speed of a glacier, not having AC when it’s high 80s out, other things I make fun of but don’t actually hate) for giving you shit about them/not wanting to spend the day driving in them.

I also was fine with you driving the Festiva - at the Gambler. I worried about your attempt to create a tent out of it on a known cold and rainy weekend and you getting majorly sick from it, mostly . As a daily, I both worried about you getting ticketed - which almost did happen - and other drivers in winter conditions.

Diesels on the other hand...that’s gonna take some getting used to. <3

Fair point on your first paragraph. And for clarification, I tend to thrive off the hate for my gambler vehicles. They give me life! :D

As a daily, I both worried about you getting ticketed - which almost did happen - and other drivers in winter conditions.

This one’s a toughie since I fully intended to daily the thing through the winter. I love daily driving my Gambler vehicles. That’s the bit that people seem to have a problem with. Sending it at a rally? Sure. Driving it down the road as a daily? Whole lotta nope!

And nah, I didn’t almost get a ticket, the cops LOVED the car! :P

That’s before it got door bars. lol
